Transportation Manager – Becton Dickinson – Baltimore, MD, USA

The Transportation Manager of the Sparks North American Regional Distribution Center is directly responsible for leadership, administration and further improvement of outbound transportation at the 26 Loveton Distribution Center, supporting several businesses and their diverse requirements.
Reporting directly to the BDX North America Transportation Manager with additional dotted line responsibility to the Sparks Distribution Center Manager the incumbent manages and balances operational service, risk, and total spend vs. budget across domestic modes of transportation. Establishes and maintains Transportation Performance Management and service provider relationships with over two dozen preferred/contracted carriers, freight forwarders/agents including monitoring of cost, on-time performance, compliance, quality and reliability of service. Manages the Traffic Office and collaborates extensively with Customer Service, DC Operations, BDDS Procurement, including Manufacturing Operations, Remote Sites, Finance, and North American/Global Transportation teams to drive optimal performance, cost savings and process improvements.
Provides subject matter expertise for Transportation-related regulatory compliance particularly movements worldwide of Cold Chain goods, as well as Inbound/Outbound and execution collaboration with Customs/Trade compliance. Leverages outbound transportation network capabilities with vendor inbound material flows wherever possible.
Responsible for risk/loss management with transportation service providers including claim filing and recovery. Supports special-service requests from clients including R&D, Medical, Technical Support, Marketing and Sales with cost-effective solutions to unique requirements. Represents BDDS as a member of the North American and Global Transportation Teams providing Subject Matter Expert expertise and analysis in order to maximize and leverage Company-scale, balanced against the complexity of BDDS’ product and customer requirements.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
Thorough knowledge of all modes of Transportation (FTL, LTL, Ground, Air/Express, Ocean, Courier, Rail, Intermodal).
Hazardous Materials Certification: DOT, IATA and IMDG.
Thorough understanding and working knowledge of Distribution Receiving, Warehousing, and Shipping functions; Enterprise Resource Planning Systems and Warehouse/Transportation Management tools (WMS/TMS). SAP preferred.
Proven analytical and interpersonal skills, including the capability to work across multiple functional areas to influence change or to achieve desired results.
Must demonstrate BD Values, Customer focus, action/results orientation, strong communication skills, and ability to seek input and feedback from others.
Strong PC Skills (i.e. Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
Education:
BS degree in Transportation/Supply Chain/Logistics or Business.
Experience:
5-10 years’ management-level experience in Transportation and/or Supply Chain Logistics. Direct experience in a highly regulated industry preferred.
Demonstrated experience with ERP-based WMS/TMS applications.
APICS-type certification (i.e., CSCP) or advanced degree a plus.
