Transportation and Packaging Manager – AmerisourceBergen – Brooks, KY, USA

Under general direction of the Manager, PMO for ICS, the Transportation and Packaging Manager will be responsible for selecting, managing and analyzing the relationships with local, regional and national transportation companies, ensuring their performance & ICS objectives are aligned. Additionally the Transportation and Packaging Manager will be responsible for design, qualification and vendor selection of controlled temperature shipper solutions that ensure product integrity under varying shipping and distribution conditions. The Transportation and Packaging Manager recommends and contributes to improved strategies, to reduce cost and improve service levels as a result of these efforts. The Transportation and Packaging Manager directly supports three Specialty Distribution Centers and various 3PL clients.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works directly with the Distribution Center Directors to determine best carrier contracts, freight bill auditing, carrier selection, rate negotiation, legal compliance, regulatory compliance, & development of new concepts in transportation; ensures that transportation plans are designed to support the organization’s strategic objectives;
- Develop transportation strategies to improve service to our customers, distribution centers and business partners;
- Evaluate and compare existing transportation-related expenses; analyze results and develop specific recommendations for cost reduction and improvement for review by management;
- Evaluate business processes and designs, develop & implement improvements that reduce cost, improve effectiveness & improves the quality/magnitude of the end result;
- Train others in the solutions designed to manage the processes necessary to support the distribution operations;
- Responsible for developing, generating and analyzing Transportation performance metrics;
- Work with carriers as needed to improve various aspects of performance;
- Ensure proper transportation of healthcare products under GMP guidelines (security, temperature control, etc.)
- Leads shipper design/development and improvement initiatives focused on new and current products, equipment, and/or processes
- Coordinates and implements packaging projects with suppliers, consultants and departments within the company
- Works closely with QA department in performing and documenting packaging qualification and validation testing to include shipping studies and cold-chain qualifications
- Serve as technical/consultative expert to other departments/clients with packaging related questions
- Understand industry best practices in engineering temperature controlled shipping methods
- Performs related duties as assigned
Qualifications
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires training and experience in fields such as transportation, business administration, logistics, or similar vocations generally obtained through completion of a three year diploma program or four year bachelor’s degree program, or equivalent combination of experience and education. Normally requires a minimum of five (5) years directly related and progressively responsible experience in the transportation and cold chain
packaging industry. Pharmaceutical experience would be an asset.
MINIMUM SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- Exposure to transportation industry – experience specific to the Healthcare environment is an asset;
- Exposure to small package, LTL, & TL experience a plus;
- Experience in the preparation of, or responding to RFP’s & RFQ’s in a transportation environment;
- Knowledge of temperature controlled shipping processes and test methods
- Skilled in managing cross-functional projects
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft applications, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook;
- Demonstrated ability to plan and manage projects
- Proficiency with project management tools, such as Microsoft Project;
- Ability to work effectively within a group environment and also independently with minimal direct supervision
- Ability to read, analyze & interpret technical journals, financial reports, & legal documents;
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing at all levels of the organization and technical abilities;
- Ability to effectively present information to all organizational levels & external groups related to the industry;
- Strong interpersonal, mathematical & organizational skills, with an attention to detail;
- Good analytical, conceptual and problem solving skills to evaluate business problems and apply knowledge to identify appropriate solutions
- Excellent negotiating skills; and
- Ability to implement processes resulting in satisfactory audit practices.
