Environmental Engineer – Sonoco Products Company – Hartsville, SC, USA
This position is responsible for development, implementation and review of site Environmental Management Systems and Compliance Programs. This position ensures that management and employees are in compliance with federal, state and local environmental rules and regulations and that behavior within the operating organizations meets the company’s Code of Conduct.
Plans, directs and manages the environmental programs at all Hartsville manufacturing sites.
Participates as a member of the site Leadership Team.
Ensures that all necessary reports and other requirements are submitted to regulatory agencies and other government bodies as required.
Serves in leadership role for persons assigned to the effluent treatment plant. Communicates and works with these employees as necessary to maintain satisfactory employee relations.
Recognizes, evaluates, recommends and implements practices and procedures to assure awareness of and compliance with environmental requirements of the organization.
Support efforts to improve efficiency of environmental control systems and reduce operating costs.
Must keep fully informed on all existing and proposed changes in State and local environmental regulations; informing the site of possible impacts.
Oversees environmental training to employees.
Helps the sites set and achieve environmental goals to reduce the operations environmental footprint. Monitors and reports on key performance metrics.
Responds to alleged violations of rules, regulations, policies, or procedures by assisting with root cause investigations. Drives corrective actions and key projects for any identified environmental concerns.
Ensures proper reporting of violations or potential violations to duly authorized enforcement agencies and Sonoco corporate environmental department as appropriate and/or required.
Support on global environmental audits or projects as needed.
May represent the company before regulatory agencies, professional and industrial organizations, and local civic and community groups.
BS degree in engineering or a science degree.
Prefer 10 years environmental experience (paper mill or chemical plant experience preferred)
Prefer extensive experience as manager of complex environmental performance, compliance permitting, regulatory issues, projects, and programs;
Experienced budgetary and expenditure control responsibility and authority.
Experience working with hourly workforce
Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment with moving mechanical parts, exposure to heat/cold, noise, and wet conditions.
Solid written and oral communications skills
Occasional travel required (10%)
