Associate Director, Supply Management – Nektar – San Francisco, CA, USA
Plans and implements activities related to the establishment of cost-effective, efficient, and secure supply chains for products, raw materials, and contracted services. Develops, implements, and maintains policies, procedures, and control systems to reduce costs, streamline procedures, secure supply chains, ensure continuity and reliability of supply, and implement solutions. Develops and deploys robust supply risk analysis tools and techniques. Evaluates supply risks inherent within each of Nektar product supply chain, recommends and coordinates the implementation of risk mitigation strategies with the relevant technical and quality functions at Nektar responsible for the applicable programs. Responsible for identification of raw material sources, utilities and outside services, as well as coordinating global procurement efforts. Leads contract negotiations with new and existing suppliers, coordinates within Nektar the appropriate stakeholder functional areas needs in all supply contracts. Identifies international Trade Compliance requirements for Nektar’s Supply Chain and develops methods, systems, and procedures that ensure Nektar complies with the applicable regulations and requirements. Evaluates optimal transportation lanes and modes for the safe transportation of Nektar materials between sources and destinations. Identifies appropriate suppliers related to the transportation of Nektar material and supplies within and across country borders. Coordinates with Freight Forwarders and Customs Brokers on Trade Compliance matters, efficient and cost effective movement of shipments, and works with the Customs Brokers to resolving any customs issues that might occur for these shipments. May select, develop, and evaluate personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function. This job contributes to and supports the company’s manufacturing and development efforts to create high value therapeutics to address unmet medical needs.
Works on issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth knowledge of organizational objectives, as well as an understanding of the business. Implements strategic policies, when selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Establishes and assures adherence to budgets, schedules, work plans and performance requirements. Assists with the development and support of supplier/commodity strategies that will influence key functional areas as in Design, Engineering, Manufacturing, Marketing/Business Development, and Program Management to ensure product supply chains and transportation lanes are designed for reliability, consistency, predictability, efficient cost, and high quality that result in risk mitigation. Acts as interface between Nektar and suppliers to develop and establish a mutually beneficial relationship between the parties. Drives contracts negotiations with suppliers and providers including Confidential Agreements, Development Agreements, and Manufacturing and Supply Agreements. Ensures full understanding of these contracts and terms by the respective project teams and relevant functional areas of Nektar, escalating issues to senior management when appropriate. Reviews and recommends appropriate strategies pertaining to the product life cycle in relation to the supply of materials and services from development stage through commercial launch and subsequent steady-state supply. Monitors activities with suppliers with focus on the identification and resolution to areas of improvement, productive feedback between internal and external partners and suppliers, drives periodic performance reviews, strengthens suppliers relationships with Nektar, understands suppliers’ corporate strategy and direction, escalates issues to get resolution, implements new business terms, drives cost reduction, and periodic reviews and updates to contracts. Oversee and manage trade compliance and cold chain requirements for strategic high value shipments. This would include understanding trade compliance requirements, working with the appropriate teams to ensure these requirements are met, ensuring all requirement documentation is available for the freight forwarder, and troubleshooting logistic concerns. For cold chain shipments, ensuring packaging requirements are clearly communicated to the originating, transportation, and destination organizations, as well as understanding and qualifying appropriate shipping lanes. Performs other duties and projects as assigned.
A Bachelors/Masters degree in a business or scientific discipline is required. Equivalent experience may be accepted. CPM Certification is preferred. A minimum of 10 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical or other related regulated industry is required. A thorough understanding of cGMPs is required; knowledge and experience of GDP would be a plus. A minimum of 8 years previous management experience is required. Project management skills are a plus. Must be team oriented and a decision-maker. Previous experience interacting with senior management is required. Experience working in a variety of environments and internationally is preferred. Able to apply mature business judgment in making decisions. Solid negotiation skills are essential. Must be experienced in tracking, managing and reporting on assigned supply and demand market trends.
